Deal of the Week reprinted from Strategic Transactions - June 2008
Gentag (wireless sensors for diagnostics) and MacroArray Technologies (biomarker discovery platform) will work together to develop a wireless immunoassay for prostate cancer.
The companies will combine Gentag's cell phone technology with MacroArray's urine-based cancer diagnostic. Gentag has found a way to integrate radiofrequency identification sensors and wireless cell phone technology to provide a non-invasive, low-cost, and disposable testing method through the use of skin patches or immunoassays. Using its proteomics-based technology, MacroArray has discovered a proprietary PCADM-1 urine-based biomarker and is working to develop it into an assay for prostate cancer. With both partners' platforms combined, the resulting product will act similarly to a pregnancy test. The patient will place a urine sample on a sensor-enabled test strip, and once the antibodies on the strip react with antigens in the urine, resulting data is transmitted to a cell phone for messaging to a physician. The companies hope that the new test will replace the traditional PSA blood test as a more rapid, effective method of prostate cancer diagnosis.
