Health Care Trends: Supply Chain Standards are Here...and Required
by Robert Neil
It's official. All medical device manufacturers are now required to use a specific set of supply chain standards to do business with a large selection of US hospitals—anyone surprised by this development has not been paying enough attention to what has been going on in this area. For years, hospitals have wanted to make the supply chain more efficient by adopting the type of standards that have made retail businesses such as Wal-Mart so successful. Now, two of the hospital industry's largest group-purchasing organizations (GPOs) have endorsed and adopted GS1 Standards and will require all device manufacturers that contract for business through the groups to use them.
The GPOs making the announcements are Premier Inc. and AmeriNet Inc., which have a combined hospital membership of more than 4,000 acute care facilities. However, this milestone change ultimately will affect virtually every hospital in the country because other GPOs are expected to follow with similar decisions. In fact, an official at Novation LLC, the industry's largest GPO, told Medtech Insight it also is preparing to make an endorsement of GS1 standards.
