Approximately $838 million financed the medical device industry during the second quarter, down 9% from the first three months. Dissecting the group of companies by therapeutic area of focus shows the usual suspects--cardiology and orthopedics--at the top, but also otolaryngology (ENT), reaching $135 million despite only four transactions completed. (See Exhibit 1.) Most of that money came from Natus Medical Inc.'s two follow-on public offerings, which together netted the hearing screening and diagnostics producer about $100 million. ENT traditionally hasn't made the top of the lists in any financing types broken down by therapy area for the past several years.
