Arbor Vita's work on diagnostics focuses on PDZ proteins, also known as cellular organizers in the body's signaling pathways. The company has discovered that detecting PDZ proteins and their binding ligands can be a strong indicator of pathogens and proteins which are overexpressed in certain diseases. BD and Arbor Vita will work together on Arbor Vita's AVC Dx1, a PDZ-based test that detects the E6 protein produced by HPV, a precursor to cervical cancer. (Arbor Vita is also developing another version of this diagnostic on its own that will be used in developing countries and funded by the National Cancer Institute.)
