AHRQ, NIH Report To Congress On Comparative Effectiveness Spending Plans

Two Health and Human Services agencies will allocate about $250 million this year in comparative effectiveness research funds from the federal stimulus package; the remainder of the $1.1 billion comparative effectiveness money will be put to use in 2010.
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the National Institutes of Health each issued reports to Congress July 30 on plans for those stimulus funds. The reports do not detail specific studies that may be funded this year, but provide insight into the agencies' plans.
AHRQ has a total of $300 million to work with, while NIH has $400 million in comparative effectiveness money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
Another $400 million was allocated to the HHS Office of the Secretary, but HHS did not issue a report to Congress on those funds because all of it will be obligated in 2010, a spokesman said.
NIH Budgets $200 Million For 2009 CER
NIH plans to spend half of its $400 million in funds in 2009 and the rest in 2010, according to its report.
Initial challenge grant applications for the NIH ARRA funds are undergoing peer review. NIH expects to make its first funding decisions for the program by mid to late August, and plans to make all fiscal 2009 comparative effectiveness research awards no later than September.
