Psynova will use its schizophrenia biomarker panels and CNS diseases database--the PsyData collection of biomarkers generated from 150 post-mortem brains of schizophrenic, bipolar and control subjects--along with RBM's multi-analyte profiling technology DiscoveryMAP (which was launched this past June and contains close to 200 analytes) to select serum protein biomarkers indicative of disease progression and that have the ability to predict or monitor the safety and efficacy of a drug. Either Psynova and RBM will develop the resulting companion test for Roche, or Roche will independently work on the diagnostic itself. Should the latter occur, Psynova would receive milestones and royalties. RBM and Psynova have been partners since June 2008, when they teamed up to develop a blood diagnostic for schizophrenia. This past October, the companies achieved a milestone by identifying certain protein biomarkers, and this event triggered an additional investment by RBM in Psynova, giving it controlling interest. While the compound that is part of the present deal wasn't specified, Roche has several to choose from, mostly through last year's acquisition of Memory Pharmaceuticals. It has a Phase II nicotinic alpha-7 agonist for schizophrenia (and Alzheimer's) plus an early-stage PDE4 inhibitor and a 5HT6 antagonist.
