The first quarter of 2008 saw a dearth in financings for both the medical device and in vitro diagnostics segments. In the former, volume fell short of the billion dollar mark while the latter failed to reach the success the previous quarter had witnessed, despite completing an equal number of transactions. M&A in medical devices didn't look any more promising, bringing in $1.6 billion, a huge slide from the impressive $10 billion total of 2007's fourth quarter. However, there was one bright spot: acquisitions within in vitro diagnostics/research reagents substantially increased to $3.1 billion from the $370 million spent in the previous three months, led by Inverness Medical Innovations' $1.1 billion takeover of Matria Healthcare Inc. Also noteworthy: oncology diagnostics alliances grew slowly and steadily thanks to increasing attention from larger companies.

According to a company press release, ETHICON, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company, "has received an irrevocable, unconditional offer from One Equity Partners to acquire the Professional Wound Care business." In 2007 the Professional Wound Care business had annual sales of about $270 million but terms of the financial transaction have not been disclosed.

Gen-Probe (nucleic acid diagnostics) has launched a tender offer to buy all the outstanding shares, warrants, and convertible bonds of public molecular diagnostics company Innogenetics NV for $334mm (€215mm) in cash. Gen-Probe will pay $9.49 (a 7% premium) for each Innogenetics common share, or $293mm.

Medtronic has acquired privately held NDI Medical (neurostimulation devices) for $42mm in cash. NDI Medical, which was established in 2002, has developed the MedStim, a bladder pacing system that first attracted Medtronic's attention.

Diversified company Elron Electronic Industries has offered to increase its stake in Given Imaging (diagnostic imaging devices for gastrointestinal disorders) by 5% through the purchase of 1.46mm ordinary shares at $16.54 each (a slight premium) or about $24.2mm.
